RAKU FIRING
Mollie Leisinger
This class meets from 10am-12pm. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS TIMING WILL OVERLAP WITH ANOTHER SESSION.
Join us for a one-of-a-kind outdoor ceramics experience! Choose a piece, glaze it, and witness the dramatic transformation through the ancient art of Raku firing.
What is Raku?
Raku firing is a fast, exciting ceramic technique where pottery is fired quickly, removed from the kiln while red-hot, and optionally enhanced with horsehair, sugar, or by placing it into a container of combustible materials. This creates a “reduction” atmosphere, resulting in stunning, often unexpected surface textures, colors, and crackles.
Note: Due to the porous and fragile nature of Raku pottery, pieces are best suited for decorative purposes. Raku pottery is not food safe.
This is an outdoor event involving fire, high heat, and smoke. Safety is our top priority.
• Protective eyewear and heat-resistant gloves will be provided
• Hair must be tied back
• Long-sleeved shirts, pants, and closed-toe shoes are highly recommended
This event will take place at our Raku Firing House 2401 S. 36th St., Lincoln, NE.
